America Reads is a federally funded work-study program that offers university students the opportunity to engage in the broader community. The program grew from the America Reads Challenge in 1997, an initiative that sought to mobilize a grassroots force of volunteers to tutor elementary grade children to ensure they could read independently by the end of third grade. Today numerous colleges and universities participate in American Reads nationwide. For more information about UVA’s program, visit the UVA America Reads webpage.

UVA Tutoring Placements

America Reads Tutors are placed in public schools and with several community partners to provide tutoring in reading and math for students from Pre-K through high school. Tutors may work with students one-on-one and in small groups or assist the whole group within the classroom setting with the support of an onsite teacher. Tutor placements also include after-school tutoring with community partners like UVA’s McGuffey Reading Services, City of Promise, and Abundant Life Academic Support.

McGuffey Reading Services

McGuffey Reading Services provides after-school literacy tutoring on Grounds and virtually. Tutors are supported by McGuffey clinicians and graduate students who provide training, lesson plans, and coaching. Tutors work with students 1:1 to provide targeted reading support. For more information, visit the McGuffey webpage.

City of Promise

City of Promise aims to foster a culture of achievement in which all students in the Charlottesville community can thrive and excel. Tutors are partnered with individual students or small groups to build meaningful relationships and offer reading support. For more information on tutoring with City of Promise, visit this webpage.

Abundant Life Academic Support
